Hone your skills, learn new strategies, and excel in the classroom with CBU’s Master of Education program. Our MEd is designed to provide advanced professional development for licensed classroom teachers and accommodate their schedules.

The program is also appropriate for others in the field of education, including community educators, professional staff and administrators at area community colleges, and trainers/developers in corporate or non-profit settings.

MEd Pathway Program Tracks 

Teacher Leadership Track

The Teacher Leadership Track is an instructional program designed to prepare individuals for roles in quasi- administration, teacher leadership and academic coaching in PreK-12 setting. The courses and modules in this program meet standards for addressing some leadership, coaching, and community building roles in the classroom and school culture. It requires 33 hours of graduate credit hours. Admission to the program requires three (3) years of successful teaching experience, a current TN teaching license, and 3.0 GPA. Candidates without a 3.0 are required to take the GRE.

Curriculum and Instruction Track

The Curriculum and Instruction Track is an instructional program designed to prepare individuals to deep-dive into curriculum design, community engagement/ advocacy, and school climate initiatives within the PreK-12 setting. Coursework is constructed around creating diverse, equitable, and instructionally sound candidates to expand the reach of educational effectiveness in all educational arenas. It requires 33 hours of graduate credit hours. Admission to the program requires a bachelor degree, two letters of recommendation, and 3.0 GPA. Candidates without a 3.0 are required to take the GRE.

Reading Specialist Endorsement Track

The Reading Specialist Add-on Track is designed for individuals interested in becoming a licensed reading specialist and help students, parents, and teachers develop and improve lifetime reading skills in their students. In conjunction with the Summer Learning Academy (Instructional Coaching) CBU offers an 18- hr. additional endorsement for the Reading Specialist PreK-12 license. It requires 33 hours of graduate credit hours. Admission to the program requires a bachelor degree, two letters of recommendation, and 3.0 GPA. Candidates without a 3.0 are required to take the GRE.

Program Requirements

The Master of Education (MEd) requires 33 hours of coursework including leadership and education courses with electives. A capstone project is required for both MEd tracks. The Master of Education (MEd) program is designed primarily for the advanced professional development of already-licensed teachers. Pathway Program Tracks in the MEd degree include Teacher Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, and Reading Specialist Add-on Endorsement tracks. A minimum of 33 graduate credit hours is required to be awarded the MEd degree.

Accreditation

鶹ý is approved by the State Department of Education of Tennessee as a Teacher Training Institution. CBU is a member of the National Catholic Educational Association and the Tennessee Association of Colleges.

How to Apply

  • Clarify your goal: if you want to stay in the classroom, the Master of Education degree is the way to go; if you are planning to go into administration, you will want to explore the MS in Educational Leadership.
  • Call the Education office at (901) 321-4350 if you have questions.

A complete application consists of the following:

  • Copy of teaching license or GRE scores
    • If you have less than a 2.75 undergraduate GPA and are not a fully licensed teacher, it is suggested that you take the GRE and obtain a minimum score of 310. Scores older than 5 years will not be accepted.
  • Official transcripts (with an undergraduate GPA of 2.75 minimum)

  • Philosophy of teaching essay; suggested topics include (you do not need to address all of these):The purpose of schooling in society
    • The role of learning in the life of a person
    • The educational needs of today’s students
    • The kind of curriculum that is important in the 21st century
    • How children and young people learn best
    • What constitutes effective teaching
    • The role of the teacher in today’s society
    • The qualities that characterize excellence in teaching
    • Challenges facing today’s schools

Interview

After a successful review of the application, you will be invited for an interview with the Graduate Education Admissions Committee.
